Indonesia seeks regulation for global digital platforms

The Indonesian Business Competition Supervisory Commission (KPPU) has highlighted the dominance of global digital platforms within Indonesia's digital ecosystem. During a focus group discussion, KPPU Chairman Gopprera Panggabean noted that while these platforms are central to digital economic activities, they lack comprehensive regulation.

Key challenges identified include asymmetries between global platforms and the telecommunications industry, the risk of dominant platforms acting as gatekeepers, and the current existence of only sectoral regulations. Panggabean emphasized the need for adaptive and comprehensive regulations to ensure a level playing field and prevent market dominance.

Dian Siswarini, Chairperson of the Indonesian Telecommunications Providers Association (ATSI), expressed support for government efforts to regulate global digital platforms. She stated that such measures should aim to create a healthy and balanced digital ecosystem, provided that the policies do not place an undue burden on consumers.
