Indonesia seeks regulation for global digital platforms

The Indonesian Business Competition Supervisory Commission (KPPU) has highlighted the dominance of global digital platforms within Indonesia's digital ecosystem. While these platforms are major economic players, they currently operate without comprehensive regulation, often acting as substitutes for other sectors such as telecommunications, advertising, and mass media.

KPPU Chairman Gopprera Panggabean identified three primary challenges: asymmetry between global platforms and the telecommunications industry, the risk of dominant platforms acting as gatekeepers for service access, and the existence of sectoral-only regulations. He emphasized the need for adaptive and comprehensive regulations to ensure a level playing field and prevent market dominance.

The Association of All Indonesian Telecommunications Providers (ATSI) expressed support for government efforts to regulate global digital platforms, provided that such policies do not place an additional burden on consumers. ATSI Chairman Dian Siswarini noted that regulation should follow the principles of a level playing field and fair share, ensuring global platforms contribute fairly to network infrastructure development and internet quality improvements.
