Indonesia seeks seat on ICAO Council for 2026

Indonesia has officially announced its candidacy for a seat on the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Council for 2026. This move aims to strengthen the nation's role in global civil aviation governance. Indonesia previously served on the Council for 12 consecutive terms between 1962 and 2001.

If elected, Indonesia intends to prioritize several key initiatives, including aviation workforce development through capacity-building and training programs, particularly for countries in the Asia-Pacific and Africa. The nation also plans to promote sustainable aviation by focusing on sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and the implementation of the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA).

Additionally, Indonesia seeks to share its experience in emerging technologies, such as drone regulation and development. The country's candidacy is supported by its significant aviation scale, managing 257 airports and serving millions of domestic and international passengers. According to ICAO USOAP audits, Indonesia's effective implementation rate of 78.85 percent exceeds both the global and Asia-Pacific averages.
