Indonesia seeks to transform mining sector into integrated industry
Indonesia is seeking to transform its mining sector from a raw commodity exporter into an integrated industrial powerhouse to bolster economic sovereignty. MIND ID has been tasked by the government to ensure that mineral extraction serves as a foundation for national industrialization rather than merely exporting unprocessed materials.
Indonesia holds significant global reserves, including the world's largest nickel reserves (42% of the global total), as well as leading positions in tin, bauxite, gold, copper, and coal. However, the sector has historically relied on raw commodity sales, leaving national revenue vulnerable to global price fluctuations.
Discussions regarding the management of these resources have highlighted concerns over revenue leakage. A roundtable hosted by the Nagara Institute focused on the mission of PT Danantara Sumber Daya Indonesia (DSI) to close gaps in state wealth management. In regions like South Sumatra, which possesses massive coal and palm oil reserves, the contribution of the mining sector to the regional GDP remains disproportionately low compared to the total value of the resources extracted.
