Indonesia seizes 1,048 tons of imported shrimp in East Java

Indonesia’s Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) has seized 1,048 tons of imported shrimp in East Java. The commodities, originating from Canada, Argentina, and Ecuador, were brought into the country through bonded zones intended for processing and re-export. However, authorities suspect the shrimp were being diverted to the domestic market, which would violate import regulations.

Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono stated that the seizure aims to protect local shrimp farmers and maintain domestic market stability. The government estimates the action has prevented potential state financial losses of approximately Rp405.8 billion. The seized stock includes 19.16 tons of pink shrimp from Canada, 885.3 tons of red shrimp from Argentina, and 144 tons of vaname shrimp from Ecuador.

In response, legal counsel for PT Baramuda Bahari and PT Megamarine Pride has called for transparency and legal certainty. While not contesting the government's authority to conduct oversight, the companies have questioned the proportionality of the sealing measures and requested clarification on the specific legal basis for the action, citing concerns over the economic impact on workers and local supply chains.
