Indonesia strengthens carbon market with new registry and credit program

Indonesia’s government reaffirmed its commitment to building a high‑integrity carbon market, announcing the launch of the Carbon Unit Registry System (SRUK) on 9 July 2026 and the issuance of forestry carbon credits exceeding 30 million tCO₂e. The reforms are anchored in Presidential Regulation No. 110/2025 and supporting ministerial regulations, aimed at delivering transparency, regulatory certainty and attracting global climate finance.

Experts at a sustainability conference warned that voluntary carbon markets alone cannot generate enough revenue to protect Indonesia’s biodiversity. They called for stronger demand, mandatory market mechanisms and the integration of voluntary and compliance schemes, citing low carbon prices (around US$10 tonne) and limited liquidity on the IDX Carbon exchange launched in 2023. The discussion highlighted the need to leverage Article 6 of the Paris Agreement and expand nature‑finance tools beyond carbon credits to fund forest protection and community benefits.
