Indonesia strengthens food security with fertilizer distribution and rice stockpiles amid El Nino

The Indonesian government is tightening supervision of subsidised fertilizer distribution to safeguard national food security. By early June 2026, more than 4.3 million tonnes—about 44 % of the 9.8 million‑ton allocation—had been delivered nationwide, supported by streamlined coordination among ministries and state‑owned enterprises. The Ministry of Food and Agricultural Affairs reported smooth deliveries in regions such as Aceh and confirmed that stock levels at PT Pupuk Indonesia remain sufficient to meet planting season needs.

Agriculture Minister Amran Sulaiman also assured that rice reserves are ample, with a government stockpile of 5.2 million tonnes that can cover the country for up to 11 months, extending to April 2027. Standing crops are estimated at 10‑11 million tonnes, and total rice available in hotels, homes and restaurants reaches 12.5 million tonnes. To mitigate El Nino‑related drought risks, the ministry has built irrigation infrastructure, deep wells and embankments, and is promoting double‑ or triple‑cropping on peatlands. Additional support includes accelerated development of cocoa, coffee, mango, and sugarcane across 870 000 hectares, including projects in Papua and the Maluku Islands.
