Indonesia strengthens patent ecosystem to drive economic growth

Indonesia is working to strengthen its intellectual property ecosystem to transform patents from mere legal documents into significant economic assets. Law Minister Supratman Andi Agtas noted that while Indonesia holds approximately 25 percent of the patent share in the ASEAN region, the economic contribution from patent utilization remains low at roughly 0.08 percent.

To address this, the government aims to connect research and inventions with industry, investment, and markets. There are ongoing efforts to designate the National Intellectual Property Master Plan (RIKIN) as a National Strategic Project to bolster funding and facilities for inventors and universities.

Simultaneously, the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI) is responding to a Constitutional Court ruling regarding patent provisions. The agency is adjusting patent examination and appeal procedures to ensure legal certainty following the court's decision on the 'second use' of known products and compounds.
