Indonesia wildfire crisis sparks widespread student protests

Thousands of students across Indonesia have launched demonstrations to protest the government’s response to a severe wildfire and toxic haze crisis. Protesters gathered in several cities, including Palangkaraya in Central Kalimantan, demanding that President Prabowo Subianto declare a national emergency to secure more aid and resources.

The haze, caused by forest and peatland fires often linked to slash-and-burn agricultural practices, has become the worst in over a decade. According to the deforestation monitor Nusantara Atlas, wildfires burned more than 1.9 million hectares in the nine months leading up to September. The resulting pollution has caused significant health issues, with reports indicating over 333,000 residents have suffered acute respiratory illnesses.

The environmental crisis has also caused major logistical and diplomatic disruptions. More than 2,600 domestic flights have been affected since August due to poor visibility. Additionally, the haze has spread to neighboring Malaysia, Singapore, and East Timor, triggering diplomatic backlash and calls for greater corporate accountability within the ASEAN region.
