Indonesia suicide rates rise amid calls for better protection and empathy

Suicide rates in Indonesia have shown a steady increase over the last three years. According to data from the Indonesian National Police, recorded cases rose from 1,332 in 2023 to 1,403 in 2024, reaching 1,503 in 2025. However, health officials note these figures likely underrepresent the true scale of the issue. Estimates from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) suggested approximately 5,236 cases in 2023, and officials believe many incidents go unreported.

The Indonesian Ministry of Health has urged the public to approach the issue with empathy rather than judgment, aligning with the global theme ‘Changing the Narrative on Suicide’.

In observance of World Suicide Prevention Day, Komnas Perempuan emphasized that prevention must include protecting victims of violence. They noted that gender-based violence significantly increases mental health vulnerabilities and suicide risks for women. Effective prevention requires ensuring safety, access to justice, and mental health support, particularly for those facing social isolation or repeated abuse.
