Indonesia supports prior notice for ballistic missile tests

Indonesia has expressed formal support for an international initiative requiring nuclear-armed nations to provide advance notice before conducting long-range ballistic missile tests. The endorsement follows a joint appeal made by a 41-nation coalition at the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva.

Indonesian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Vahd Nabyl A. Mulachela stated that mandatory pre-launch notifications are vital for maintaining international stability, noting that such transparency helps reduce the risk of military miscalculation and misperception. The initiative urges global powers to provide at least 24 hours of notice for launches involving intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs), and space launch vehicles (SLVs).

The coalition includes the United States, Japan, and Australia, among others. Indonesia indicated that increased transparency regarding missile testing could support global efforts to end the nuclear arms race and encourage nuclear-weapon states to meet their international disarmament commitments.
