Indonesia targets 100% birth certificate coverage by 2026
Indonesia's Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Ribka Haluk, has urged local governments to accelerate the issuance of birth certificates to reach a national target of 100 percent coverage by 2026. While the current national coverage exceeds 96 percent, significant regional disparities remain.
During a coordination meeting with the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI), Haluk noted that birth certificates serve as the essential foundation for children to obtain further identity documents, such as the Child Identity Card (KIA) and the Electronic ID Card (KTP-el) upon reaching age 17.
Specific regional gaps were highlighted, including Papua Pegunungan, where coverage is approximately 35 percent, and Papua Tengah, which stands at 69 percent. The Ministry of Home Affairs aims to collaborate across sectors to ensure more equitable access to civil identity documents and child protection.
