Indonesia reaches self‑sufficiency in eight key food commodities

Indonesia's Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman announced that the country has achieved self‑sufficiency in eight strategic food commodities: rice, corn, large chilies, cayenne pepper, consumer sugar, chicken, eggs and shallots. The government credited coordinated efforts among ministries, farmers, extension workers, academics, the military and police.

The achievement is reflected in a Government Rice Reserve (CBP) now exceeding 5 million tonnes – the highest level in the nation’s history – and a Farmer Exchange Rate (NTP) of 127.73 in May 2026. Agricultural sector GDP grew 5.74 percent. In response to concerns about a potential El Niño‑related drought, the minister assured the public that the current rice stock of about 5.2 million tonnes provides a comfortable buffer, far above the roughly 3 million tonnes needed during dry seasons.

President Prabowo Subianto highlighted food security as the fundamental measure of national success, underscoring the government’s policies such as higher purchase prices for unhusked rice, improved fertilizer distribution and reduced subsidised fertilizer costs.
