Indonesia targets Asia-Pacific internet hub status via submarine cables

Indonesia is positioning itself to become a major regional connectivity hub for the Asia-Pacific, leveraging its strategic geography to offer alternative routes for global internet traffic. This move comes as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, specifically around the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea, create risks for existing submarine cable routes.

Telkom Indonesia is working to diversify global corridors, including intra-Asia, Trans-Pacific, and Asia-Europe routes. The company is also preparing new corridors to connect with the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America. This diversification aims to provide greater resilience for customers by offering alternative paths to destinations like Japan and the United States.

To support this infrastructure, the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries has identified four key landing station locations for international submarine cables: Jakarta, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), Manado, and Jayapura. These stations are intended to cover different geographic sectors, with Papua and NTT serving as strategic points for connections toward Australia.
