Indonesia targets completion of Flores and Kalimantan border roads by 2028

The Indonesian Ministry of Public Works has set a 2028 deadline for the completion of major infrastructure projects in Flores and the Kalimantan border regions.

In Flores, Minister of Public Works Dody Hanggodo aims to finalize the 472.48-kilometer North Flores Highway, connecting Labuan Bajo to Maumere. While 385.07 kilometers are currently paved, work remains to address 87.41 kilometers of unpaved sections, including forest areas and dirt roads. The project also involves widening existing sections to meet national standards of 6–7 meters in width.

Simultaneously, the government is accelerating the construction of a 2,300-kilometer border road in Kalimantan. Following directives from President Prabowo Subianto, the project aims to improve connectivity in North Kalimantan, specifically within the Malinau Regency. Local officials, including Malinau Regent Wempi W. Mawa, emphasized that these infrastructure developments are critical for ending the isolation of inland communities and improving access to healthcare and economic opportunities.
