Indonesia targets December deadline for Asset Forfeiture Bill

The Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) and the government have reached an agreement to finalize discussions on the Asset Forfeiture Bill (RUU Perampasan Aset) by a December 2026 deadline. The legislative process is expected to include public hearings, harmonization, and working meetings with the government to address various issues.

While there is public support for the bill as a tool to combat economic crimes and prevent criminals from hiding illicit gains, the rapid timeline has sparked concerns. Legal experts and civil society have raised questions regarding the potential for vague articles that could lead to the abuse of power. There is a call for the legislation to strictly adhere to the principles of due process of law and human rights to ensure that the state's authority to seize assets does not infringe upon legitimate property rights.
