Indonesia targets foreign companies over forest fires

President Prabowo Subianto has warned that Indonesia may cancel the operating permits of foreign companies that repeatedly violate regulations, specifically those linked to forest and land fires in Kalimantan and Sumatra. The President noted that some companies have held concessions for over a decade while committing multiple violations, with one instance involving 19 infractions. He suggested that permits should be revoked after just two violations.

In response to the ongoing crisis, Indonesian legislators are calling for stricter enforcement. Member of Commission III of the DPR, Sarifuddin Sudding, urged the government to move beyond administrative sanctions, such as freezing business licenses, and instead pursue criminal prosecution against corporations and individuals involved in bribery related to land concessions.

Additionally, Commission IV member Daniel Johan has called for improved safety standards and personal protective equipment (PPE) for forest fire volunteers following the death of a volunteer in Barito Kuala, South Kalimantan. Legislators are also advocating for forest and land fires to be designated as a national disaster to ensure faster funding and better protection for responders.
