Indonesia targets illegal textile imports to bolster national industry

President Prabowo Subianto has ordered Customs to crack down on the illegal import of used clothing, known locally as 'balpres,' to protect Indonesia's national textile and garment industry. While the intensity of illegal textile imports has begun to decrease, industry representatives note that legal loopholes still allow for 'impor borongan' (bulk imports) of fabrics and textile products.

Farhan Aqil Syauqi, Secretary General of APSYFI, emphasized that illegal imports impact the entire supply chain, including yarn, fabric, and finished garments. He noted that illegal used clothing poses a significant threat to local businesses, particularly when domestic purchasing power declines.

Beyond enforcement, the government is focusing on revitalizing the national textile and textile products (TPT) sector to bolster economic growth, increase exports, and support employment. This strategy involves strengthening the manufacturing foundation and utilizing entities like the Daya Anagata Nusantara Investment Management Agency (BPI Danantara) to support strategic national industries and modernization.
