Indonesia targets increased social security coverage for workers
Regional governments and social security agencies in Indonesia are working to expand employment insurance coverage. In Riau, the provincial government has set a target to ensure 85 percent of workers are protected by social security programs by 2029. To achieve this, officials are encouraging labor unions to act as strategic partners in increasing participation, particularly among educators and educational staff.
In West Java, data from September 2026 shows that only 7.9 million out of a potential 22.5 million workers are currently registered with BPJS Ketenagakerjaan. The Director of BPJS Ketenagakerjaan, Saiful Hidayat, emphasized the need for massive literacy campaigns and collaboration with local governments. This includes initiatives like the 'Asuransi Aing' program, which aims to provide protection for 5.4 million informal workers in the region.
