Indonesia targets Japan market for East Java mango exports
Indonesia’s Minister of Transmigration, Muhammad Iftitah Sulaiman Suryanagara, announced a plan to develop commodity‑based economic zones in East Java to boost mango exports to Japan. The initiative aims to overcome technical trade barriers, especially fruit‑fly control, by coordinating with government agencies and investing in required quarantine measures.
The minister said Japan is a priority market because of its strong demand for premium fruit. Estimates from the Quarantine Agency suggest annual Japanese demand could reach about 7,000 tons, worth roughly Rp140 billion (US$7.5 million). If export requirements are met, Indonesia could initially supply around 600 tons of East Java mangoes, including Pasuruan avocado mangoes and Probolinggo arumanis varieties, which are considered highly competitive.
The programme is part of a broader transmigration transformation that seeks to create new economic growth hubs, with support from regional officials, businesses, media and digital creators to promote the province’s flagship products.
