Indonesia targets poverty reduction through agricultural and land reform
Indonesian institutions and legislative bodies are pursuing multi-faceted strategies to alleviate poverty and improve the welfare of smallholder farmers through agricultural empowerment and land reform.
The National Council for Social Welfare (DNIKS), in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Affairs, Bappenas, and the Perempuan Tani organization, is focusing on strengthening the agricultural sector. This initiative emphasizes the role of women in farming families as key drivers of household economic empowerment and value-added agricultural processing.
Simultaneously, the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) is advancing a Draft Law on Agrarian Reform. The legislation aims to go beyond simple land legalization by addressing land ownership inequality and ensuring land redistribution provides sustainable livelihoods. The goal is to transform smallholder farmers into more prosperous producers by protecting distributed land from speculators and resolving structural agrarian conflicts.
