Indonesia targets wellness tourism growth with new industry association
Indonesia is positioning wellness tourism as a new pillar for its tourism industry, leveraging its natural resources, culture, and traditional wellness practices. The government has identified Jakarta and Bali as the initial focal points for developing this wellness tourism ecosystem during the 2026–2027 period.
The global wellness tourism market is seeing significant growth, with projections reaching $1.08 trillion by 2026 and potentially $2.4 trillion by 2035. To support this development, the Indonesian Wellness Tourism Practitioners Association (PERWAKIN) was officially established during a founding congress in Jakarta on August 8, 2026.
Fikri Aziz, the Organizing Committee Chairman of the PERWAKIN congress, stated that the organization aims to act as an ecosystem driver by elevating local Indonesian wellness wisdom to high-quality, certified standards capable of attracting both domestic and international tourists. The initiative requires collaboration across the health, sports, tourism, academic, and business sectors.
