Indonesia targets zero PCBs by 2028 through hazardous waste management

Indonesia's Ministry of Environment is working toward a national target to achieve zero Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) by 2028. This goal aligns with national regulations and international commitments under the Stockholm Convention.

During a visit to the PT Prasadha Pamunah Limbah Industri (PPLi) facility in Bogor, West Java, Deputy Minister of Environment Diaz Hendropriyono identified PPLi as a critical backbone for meeting these environmental targets. The facility utilizes various technologies to manage hazardous waste, including dehalogenation, incineration, and encapsulation before landfill disposal.

The government is encouraging both private companies and State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) to surrender equipment containing PCBs, such as electrical transformers, to official processing facilities. To support this transition, the Ministry has pledged to provide policy support and facilitate the supply of feedstock to ensure the effective removal of these toxic substances from various industrial sectors.
