Indonesia: Taufik Hidayat’s kidnapping and assault case moves toward trial

Authorities in West Java are preparing to bring suspect Taufik Hidayat to trial for the alleged kidnapping and severe assault of a woman identified only as YTR. The prosecution has assembled a nine‑person team to handle the case, and the investigation remains in the pre‑trial stage pending completion of the police inquiry.

The victim suffered serious injuries and continues to receive intensive care in Bandung’s Hasan Sadikin Hospital. Police have conducted a reconstruction of the crimes, with Hidayat reenacting 21 scenes at the regional police headquarters, demonstrating the use of bare hands, a helmet, an iron table leg and a golok (machete) across three primary crime scenes.

The reconstruction was held at the police headquarters for security and community‑comfort reasons, as several of the original locations are occupied dormitory rooms. Prosecutors will draft charges under sections of the Indonesian Criminal Code relating to aggravated assault, violent kidnapping and deprivation of liberty with resulting injuries before the case is forwarded to the Bandung District Court for a first hearing.
