Indonesia tests safety of Red‑White CNG cylinders for household fuel conversion

The Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources is conducting a third‑stage safety trial of the new Red‑White compressed natural gas (CNG) cylinders intended to replace 3‑kg LPG bottles in homes. Minister Bahlil Lahadalia said the switch could cut state energy subsidies by up to Rp30 trillion, as CNG is 30‑40 % cheaper than subsidised LPG. The programme targets a 2026 rollout if the composite Type‑4 cylinders, imported from China and tested by Lemigas, meet pressure‑strength and valve‑integration standards. A price‑parity policy will initially keep consumer prices equal to LPG while the government expects to reduce subsidy outlays by about 30 %. The pilot emphasizes rigorous testing to ensure household safety before any wider implementation.
