Indonesia tests toll roads as emergency fighter jet runways

The Indonesian Ministry of Public Works is preparing national toll road infrastructure to serve as emergency landing and takeoff strips for fighter jets. On October 22, 2026, the Indonesian Air Force (TNI AU) conducted successful testing on the Pasuruan–Probolinggo toll road in East Java.

The test utilized a 3.5-kilometer segment with a width of 24.2 meters, specifically chosen for its rigid pavement construction. Public Works Minister Dody Hanggodo stated that this dual-purpose infrastructure is intended to strengthen national defense readiness alongside civilian mobility and logistics.

Other toll roads are being prepared for similar strategic functions, including the Terbanggi Besar–Pematang Panggang–Kayu Agung (Terpeka) toll in Lampung, which served as a pilot site earlier in 2026. Additionally, the Jakarta–Cikampek II Selatan and Banda Aceh–Sigli toll roads are being designated for potential use as emergency runways.
