Indonesia's Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman Leads Rice Fraud Crackdown and Ministerial Dismissals
On Sunday in Jakarta, Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman said the Food Task Force has identified 39 suspects in 38 cases of alleged irregularities in the rice sector. The crackdown, ordered by President Prabowo Subianto, targets fortified and premium rice that authorities estimate have caused losses of about 71 trillion rupiah (US$4.3 bn) and 98 trillion rupiah (US$5.9 bn) respectively. Inspections of fortified rice and other rice products are being expanded, with the National Food Agency, police Food Task Force and regional authorities involved.
Sulaiman also announced that around a dozen senior officials in the Ministry of Agriculture will be removed for alleged involvement in the food‑mafia network. He emphasized that “the state must not lose to practices that harm the people.” The actions aim to dismantle food cartels, protect consumers and restore confidence in Indonesia’s rice market.
