Indonesia's Nickel Industry Faces Production Gains and Export Hurdles

Indonesia's nickel sector saw a sharp rise in output and sales in the second quarter of 2026. Vale Indonesia reported 1.07 million wet metric tons (WMT) of nickel ore sold from the Bahodopi block and 495,601 WMT from the Pomalaa block, bringing semester‑long sales to 584,584 WMT. The company also produced 16,153 tons of nickel matte in Q2, a 19 % quarter‑on‑quarter increase, totalling 29,773 tons for the first half of the year.

At the same time, Chinese smelter owner Tsingshan Holding Group halted exports of mixed‑hydroxide‑precipitate (MHP) and saw delays in other nickel products after Indonesia introduced tighter inspection rules that require additional laboratory testing for rare‑earth and radioactive elements. The new policy has slowed the shipment of nickel and related alloys, raising concerns about global supply for stainless‑steel and electric‑vehicle batteries.

The broader backdrop includes Indonesia’s shift from raw‑material exports toward greater domestic processing and value‑addition, while maintaining deep economic ties with China. The government has reiterated that it will not fully relax the RKAB nickel‑ore quotas, and nickel spot prices rose to about US$17,048 per tonne in July 2026.
