Indonesia to consider MSME conditions for mandatory halal certification

The Indonesian government is considering the specific conditions of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) regarding the upcoming mandatory halal certification requirement set to begin on October 18, 2026.

Menteri UMKM Maman Abdurrahman stated that micro and small businesses cannot be treated the same as medium or large enterprises due to differences in capital strength and regulatory literacy. He emphasized that the government will apply wisdom and discretion to ensure that MSMEs are not abandoned if they have not yet completed the certification process.

To facilitate compliance, the Halal Product Assurance Organizing Agency (BPJPH) has provided a ‘self-declare’ mechanism specifically designed to simplify the process for micro and small business owners.
