Indonesia to establish rehabilitation centers for drug-using inmates
The Indonesian government is planning to establish rehabilitation and re-education centers specifically for drug-using inmates within the correctional system. This initiative follows presidential directives aimed at addressing prison overcrowding, with a particular focus on inmates of productive age.
Law Minister Supratman Andi Agtas announced that a cross-ministerial meeting has resulted in the formation of a small task force. This team will spend one week formulating detailed policies based on available data. The program aims to combine rehabilitation with re-education to ensure inmates can engage in productive activities during their confinement.
The implementation will involve several agencies: the Ministry of Immigration and Correctional Affairs will provide data and access; the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology and the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) will develop curricula; and the Ministry of Health, alongside the National Narcotics Board (BNN), will manage the rehabilitation aspects.
