Indonesia to implement mandatory halal certification in October 2026

Indonesia is set to implement mandatory halal certification starting October 18, 2026, in accordance with national legislation. Ahmad Haikal Hasan, Head of the Halal Product Assurance Organizing Agency (BPJPH), stated that the policy aims to provide consumer protection and business certainty through a data-driven approach.

To ease the transition, the government has pledged that implementation will not be repressive. There will be no forced inspections or sweeping of businesses. Authorities will provide communication channels, guidance, and flexibility for businesses that are not yet ready, potentially allowing for additional time of one to two years to meet requirements.

Furthermore, businesses that choose not to use halal labels are permitted to do so, provided they do not make unauthorized halal claims. The Ministry of Religious Affairs is also mobilizing its network, including religious affairs offices (KUA) and local religious counselors, to educate the public and ensure a smooth transition. The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) and various academics have expressed support for the policy, noting its potential to strengthen the national halal ecosystem and international standing.
