Indonesia to invest $270 million to restore Sarulla geothermal plant

The Indonesian government is preparing a new investment of up to US$270 million (about Rp4.8 trillion) to bring the Sarulla geothermal power plant in Tapanuli Utara, North Sumatra, back to its installed capacity of 330 MW. Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Yuliot Tanjung said the administration process will be completed by October 2026, after which capacity‑restoring work is slated for 2027‑2028.

Sarulla, currently operating at roughly 220 MW, has a total geothermal potential of around 1,100 MW. Restoring the plant to full capacity is presented as a priority for national energy security and a step toward further development of the site’s larger resource base.
