Indonesia to mandate halal certification for products starting October 2026

The Indonesian government is set to implement mandatory halal certification for various product categories, including both local and imported goods, starting October 18, 2026. Haikal Hasan, head of the BPJPH, stated that there will be no delays in the implementation, though the government is currently drafting specific regulations for micro and small enterprises (UMK) and certain raw materials to ensure orderly execution.

In response, the Indonesian Cosmetics Association (Perkosmi) has expressed concerns regarding the industry's readiness. Perkosmi Chairman Sancoyo Antarikso requested a realistic transition period to prevent mass product returns, stock losses, and supply chain disruptions. He noted that a single cosmetic product can contain 40 to 50 raw materials, many of which are imported and may not yet possess halal certification. Perkosmi suggested that products already on the market should be allowed to be sold until they reach their expiration dates, with new labeling requirements applied to subsequent production cycles.
