Indonesia tourism sector sees strong domestic travel and event-driven economic boost

Indonesia’s tourism ministry reported that domestic travel reached 523.22 million trips from January to May 2026, a 2.86 % increase over the same period last year, with May alone showing an 8.69 % year‑on‑year rise. International arrivals also grew, totaling 6.07 million visitors in the first five months, up 7.68 % from 2025, and the country recorded a surplus of 2.37 million trips, 32.49 % higher than the previous year.

The events segment contributed significantly to the economy. From 125 scheduled tourism and entertainment agendas, 28 regional festivals attracted 2.46 million visitors, involved more than 7,200 micro‑, small‑ and medium‑enterprises and created 61,000 jobs, generating roughly Rp196.97 billion. Additional national and international events drew 614 000 visitors, engaged 1,326 UMKM and 18 000 workers, adding another Rp661.15 billion. Overall, tourism‑related events produced an economic turnover of about Rp858 billion in the first half of 2026. Upcoming high‑profile concerts and festivals are expected to further strengthen Indonesia’s position as an event‑based tourism destination.
