Indonesia tourism sites reopen following fire and earthquake

Indonesian Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana has addressed the status of major tourist destinations following recent natural disturbances.

Mount Bromo in East Java has reopened to visitors as of August 20, 2026, following a recent fire. The Minister emphasized the importance of environmental preservation and urged tourists to remain vigilant during the dry season to prevent further forest fires. She noted that tourism recovery must occur alongside environmental protection to safeguard the cultural and natural value of the Tengger community's landscape.

In Labuan Bajo, Nusa Tenggara Timur, tourism activities remain operational following a 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Flores on August 15, 2026. Komodo National Park, local airports, and maritime transport are functioning normally. While attractions such as Rangko Cave and various tourism villages have resumed operations, the Minister advised travelers to prioritize safety and follow official guidance due to ongoing aftershocks.
