Indonesia tourism trends show French surge in Bali and growth in Nunukan
Tourism data for August 2026 shows varying trends across different Indonesian regions. In Bali, French tourist arrivals saw a significant surge of 20.42 percent, reaching 41,937 visitors and overtaking India in the monthly rankings. This shift was attributed to European summer holidays driven by extreme heat in Europe. Australia remains the top source market for Bali with 161,258 visitors, followed by China, France, India, and the United Kingdom.
In Nunukan, foreign visitor numbers rose by 14.82 percent from July to August 2026, increasing from 1,235 to 1,418 people. However, BPS Nunukan noted that the average length of stay remains low at 1.25 days, with a room occupancy rate of 23.58 percent. Officials noted that many visitors to this border region travel for family, trade, or work rather than tourism, suggesting a need for more diverse local attractions to increase economic impact.
