Indonesia Trade Minister: Specialty rice will not displace premium rice markets
Indonesian Minister of Trade Budi Santoso stated that the rising trend of specialty rice, such as fortified and long-grain varieties, will not displace the market for premium and medium rice in modern retail. He noted that these products cater to different consumer segments and market needs.
To ensure continued availability, the government is utilizing Perum Bulog to supply the retail market. Bulog provides premium rice under the Befood brand, while medium rice is distributed through the Food Supply and Price Stabilization (SPHP) program.
Regarding fortified rice, the Minister clarified that setting maximum retail prices falls under the authority of the National Food Agency (Bapanas). However, the Ministry of Trade will continue to monitor the circulation of fortified rice to ensure that labeling and nutritional content accurately match the information provided on the packaging.
