Roy Suryo and Dr Tifa arrested in Indonesia over alleged Jokowi diploma fraud

On 19 June 2026 the Jakarta Metro Police (Polda Metro Jaya) detained former minister Roy Suryo and doctor Tifauzia Tyassuma (known as Dr Tifa) within ten minutes of each other – Dr Tifa at 06:47 WIB and Suryo at about 07:00 WIB. They are suspects in a case accusing President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) of holding a fake diploma. Prosecutors have charged them with defamation, hate speech and violations of Indonesia’s electronic information law.

Police officials said the arrest follows the completion of the case file (P21) and that the investigation complied with criminal procedure. Kapolri Listyo Sigit Prabowo described the detention as a routine step before the file is handed to the prosecutor’s office, which is scheduled for the following week. The police also reported extensive evidence‑gathering, including interviews with 94 witnesses, testimony from 26 experts and laboratory analysis of documents and digital data.

The People’s Sovereignty Reclamation Movement (GMKR) publicly urged the police to release the two detainees, arguing the arrests threaten freedom of expression and the presumption of innocence. Police spokesperson Commissioner Budi Hermanto reaffirmed that the arrests were lawful and that the suspects will be transferred to the prosecutor’s office for the next phase of the case.
