Indonesia university majors contributing most to graduate unemployment
A report by the Institute for Economic and Social Research at the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Indonesia (LPEM FEB UI) has identified five academic disciplines that account for approximately 40% of unemployed bachelor's degree holders in Indonesia.
Based on the August 2025 National Labor Force Survey (Sakernas), the study titled ‘When Access to Higher Education Increases, Is the Labor Market Ready?’ ranks the contributing fields as follows:
1. Management (10.3%) 2. Law (9.0%) 3. Economics (8.7%) 4. Education (7.1%) 5. Accounting (5.1%)
The report notes that while fields like Management offer broad career paths in finance, marketing, and human resources, graduates face intense competition from various other disciplines at entry-level positions. Additionally, the data highlights a mismatch in the labor market, with approximately 8 million graduates working in roles that require lower educational qualifications than the degrees they hold.
