Indonesia urges furniture industry to diversify exports

Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto has urged the national furniture industry to diversify its export markets to mitigate global economic uncertainties. Speaking at the International Furniture and Craft Fair Indonesia (IFFINA)+ 2026, Hartarto emphasized the need to reduce reliance on specific markets, noting that approximately 60 percent of Indonesia's furniture exports are currently concentrated in the United States.

Indonesia's furniture sector has shown strong growth, with an 11.82 percent increase. The industry has maintained a trade surplus since 2021; in 2025, exports reached US$2.39 billion against US$1.92 billion in imports, resulting in a surplus of US$473.31 million. The country currently ranks 25th globally in furniture exports with a 0.77 percent market share.

To increase global competitiveness, Hartarto advised producers to focus on design, sustainability, and functionality to meet shifting consumer preferences. He also highlighted Indonesia's natural resource advantages, including its significant production of roundwood and its supply of over 80 percent of the world's rattan.
