Indonesia urges Meta to accelerate deactivation of underage accounts

Indonesian Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid has called on Meta to accelerate the deactivation of accounts belonging to users under the age of 16. This demand follows a meeting in New York with Meta executives, including Vice President Kevin J. Martin and Global Head of Safety Antigone Davis.

The request is driven by Government Regulation No. 17 of 2025, known as PP TUNAS, which aims to protect children in the digital environment by restricting social media access for those under 16. Hafid emphasized that Meta must provide a concrete timeline and an acceleration plan for implementing these restrictions across Facebook, Instagram, and Threads.

In addition to age controls, the Indonesian government is demanding stricter enforcement against illegal content, such as online gambling, pornography, hate speech, and disinformation. While acknowledging Meta’s initial efforts—which included deactivating 184,000 accounts of users under 13 between March and May 2026—the government warned of potential administrative sanctions or access blocks for platforms that fail to comply with national regulations.
