Indonesia urges UN-regional cooperation on human rights
Indonesian Deputy Minister of Human Rights Mugiyanto has called for strengthened cooperation between United Nations human rights mechanisms and regional organizations. Speaking at the 63rd session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Mugiyanto emphasized that international mechanisms cannot operate effectively in isolation, particularly given the financial constraints currently facing the UN.
He argued that closer collaboration with regional bodies would allow international human rights systems to better address the specific needs and diverse contexts of different countries and regions. Mugiyanto highlighted the importance of national ownership to ensure that human rights policies remain relevant to local characteristics.
As part of this regional approach, Indonesia promotes cooperation through the ASEAN Human Rights Dialogue (AHRD), a forum designed for ASEAN member states to share experiences and challenges while engaging with civil society.
