Indonesia investigates 8 citizens reportedly joining Russian military
The Indonesian government is conducting a verification process following reports from the Ukrainian Foreign Intelligence Service (FISU) that at least eight Indonesian citizens have joined the Russian military. Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Correctional Affairs, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, stated that the government is investigating the identities, recruitment methods, and specific roles of these individuals to determine if they joined voluntarily or were victims of deception.
Reports suggest the individuals may have been recruited through social media or messaging platforms like WhatsApp and Telegram, lured by promises of high salaries, non-combat positions, and expedited Russian citizenship. Data indicates that seven of the eight citizens reportedly obtained Russian visas earlier this year.
Deputy Minister for Migrant Worker Protection, Christina Aryani, noted that the status of human trafficking must be legally assessed based on evidence of exploitation during recruitment. Meanwhile, members of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) are seeking clarity from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Immigration regarding the legal status and citizenship of those involved.
