Indonesia warns of potential extinction for local traditional foods
Indonesia's Ministry of Tourism has raised concerns regarding the scarcity and potential extinction of various local traditional foods. Mapping by the Ministry of Culture identified approximately 2,000 cultural heritages in Indonesia, 207 of which are food-related. Data suggests that roughly 45% of local foods in certain destinations are at risk of disappearing if preservation efforts are not implemented.
To combat this, the Ministry of Tourism is encouraging the integration of traditional culinary arts into the tourism and restaurant industries. Officials suggest that modern chefs can play a vital role in reintroducing these flavors to the public through creative culinary applications. Additionally, local governments are encouraged to promote traditional dishes as part of regional tourism attractions to ensure they remain culturally relevant and economically viable.
