Indonesia women face ongoing barriers to leadership and equality

In commemoration of Indonesia's 81st Independence Day, discussions held at Universitas Paramadina and by legal experts have highlighted that while opportunities for women in Indonesia are expanding, true equality remains elusive.

During a webinar hosted by Universitas Paramadina, academics noted that women have transitioned from purely domestic roles to becoming drivers of MSMEs and family economic resilience. However, experts pointed out a significant gap in political empowerment and strategic leadership. Dr. Rini Sudarmanti observed that while female participation is high in academic settings, their presence diminishes in strategic public roles.

Legal expert Haghia Sophia Lubis added that increased visibility does not equate to equal opportunity. She identified the “glass ceiling” as a major structural barrier preventing women from reaching top leadership positions, particularly as they transition from middle management. Additionally, the “double burden” of professional responsibilities and domestic duties continues to complicate women's career advancement. Economic independence through education, financial literacy, and asset access is cited as a critical factor for strengthening women's positions in society.
