Indonesian batik traditions face revitalization through modern design
Traditional batik styles from Kudus, Demak, and Banyumas are facing a decline in popularity and production. An exhibition titled ‘Jejak Keindahan: Batik Kudus, Demak, dan Banyumas’ was held at the Museum Tekstil in Jakarta to commemorate National Batik Day. Curators noted that these specific regional traditions saw a significant drop in production between the 1960s and 1980s due to shifting market dynamics and a lack of interest among younger generations.
To ensure the survival of this national identity, industry leaders are encouraging the modernization of batik. Andy Rusli, Director of Batik Keris, suggested that younger people can integrate batik into daily life by moving beyond formal attire. He noted that modern designs now include jackets, skirts, and even sleepwear, utilizing pastel colors and contemporary patterns while still respecting original motifs.
