Indonesian communities implement local organic waste management initiatives

Communities in Indonesia are implementing localized waste management strategies to address organic waste challenges. In Sukarasa Village, Samarang District, Garut, residents have been independently managing waste for several years. The initiative involves sorting household, religious institution, and restaurant waste into organic, inorganic, and residue categories. Organic waste is processed using the open windrow method with carbon materials and eco-enzymes to create fertilizer for agriculture and permaculture.

In Salatiga, the city government and the PKK Women's Family Welfare Movement have launched the ‘Ratu Ngebor’ initiative, which promotes the ‘One House, One Biopore’ concept. This program encourages households to manage organic waste at the source using biopore holes to benefit the ecosystem through composting. To support the movement, Baznas provided funding to accelerate the creation of biopores at 250 locations, aiming to transform waste management into a sustainable community habit.
