Indonesian communities strengthen waste management through waste banks

Local governments in Indonesia are strengthening community-based waste management through the expansion and optimization of waste banks (Bank Sampah).

In Indragiri Hilir, the regency government and the PKK team are promoting waste management at the household level. This initiative aims to maintain environmental cleanliness and health while creating economic opportunities through recycling. Officials emphasized the importance of building an environmental culture and reducing the burden on landfills by utilizing the 5R principles: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rot, and Refuse.

In Yogyakarta, the Gunungketur area in Pakualaman has established nine active waste banks across nine community units (RW). The Yogyakarta Environmental Agency is conducting monitoring to ensure these institutions move beyond mere formal existence to actively drive community participation in waste sorting and management.
