Indonesian crew members on MV Star Janet face unpaid wages and technical issues

Seven Indonesian crew members aboard the MV Star Janet are facing difficult conditions in the waters of Zhuhai, Guangdong Province, China. The vessel experienced repeated generator failures, resulting in power outages, limited food supplies, and a loss of communication for the crew.

In addition to these technical issues, the crew members have reported not receiving wages since departing on March 16, 2026. The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia (KJRI) in Guangzhou, is actively monitoring the situation.

The vessel was previously assisted by the Guangdong Maritime Safety Administration (MSA) to escape tropical cyclone ‘Butterfly’ and was moved to a safe location in Guishan. While technical repairs to the ship were completed in late July 2026, the issue of unpaid wages remains. Following coordination by the Ministry, the company has committed to paying the crew's salaries by mid-August 2026 before the ship continues its journey.
