A 39‑year‑old Malaysia Airlines pilot was detained at Soekarno‑Hatta International Airport in Jakarta after landing from Kuala Lumpur. Customs officials discovered roughly 26 kg of narcotics in his luggage, including more than 70,000 ecstasy tablets, methamphetamine and cocaine, and a bottle of urine suspected of being used to tamper with a drug test. Toxicology confirmed the presence of multiple illegal substances, raising concerns that the pilot may have been under the influence while operating the flight that carried about 170 passengers.

Indonesian authorities said the pilot could face the death penalty if convicted. Malaysia responded by sending a Bukit Aman narcotics investigation team to Jakarta to probe the wider syndicate, and announced that no extradition request would be made. The Malaysian government also ordered the deployment of Royal Malaysia Police officers to its airports, adding 50 General Operations Force personnel to Kuala Lumpur International Airport and reviewing background‑check and health‑examination procedures for airline crew. Additional security measures include increasing aviation‑security staff and tightening airport screening protocols.

The case is part of a broader crackdown on trans‑national drug trafficking that has also seen the arrest of three Malaysian women in Jakarta on unrelated small‑scale drug charges.
